Post Why You Can Imagine It like Netflix
If you are not sure what to make of "Fortnite," the videogaming phenomenon which has become shorthand for battle-royale gambling, maybe it might help to think of it like Netflix. That's because while Netflix (NFLX) has grown into one of the main ways people consume movie, according to a Monday note by analysts at Wedbush, it's basically moved them from 1 tool for doing this to another.

"The emergence of Netflix didn't kill off television viewership, but served to enlarge general consumption of content that was filmed while taking some small share from broadcast television screening," they wrote. "Likewise, we believe that Fortnite has grown the overall gaming audience, while partially cannibalizing involvement in other games."

The battle royale genre, which has thrived in the U.S. over the last several months, has directed videogame industry investors to question what effect games like "Fortnite"--free to play with in-game purchases--may have on conventional titles bought as one-offs or via subscription.

In the most bearish case, it's enormous upheaval. At the favorable, it's attracting more gamers in--and providing big-name publishers a new potential revenue stream.

"In our opinion, the free-to-play Fortnite has attracted as many as an estimated 40 million new players to the shooter genre," Wedbush wrote, noting projected April industry earnings up 50% year-over-year to more than $330 million.

A recent survey conducted for BTIG discovered that over a fifth of "Fortnite Items" players were not previously gamers; another 5 percent played or less.

Investors appear optimistic. A basket of console videogame stocks tracked by Stifel recently traded around 26 times forward 12-month EPS quote, representing a 50% premium to the S&P 500.

"Videogame publishers are certainly facing near-term competition from Fortnite," BTIG's Brandon Ross wrote in late April. " However, Fortnite's success reminds us, and even epitomizes the enormous opportunities for publishers attracted by connectivity, particularly as they continue to transition into the matches as a support (GaaS) version. And, the learnings from Fortnite's victory might really help the significant publishers at the GaaS transition and also to unlock new growth opportunities."
