Post ter before dropping a 3-1 decision to the Bruins. David
HOUSTON -- Dwight Howard was late for the pregame shootaround. So he knew that playing on his 28th birthday, and against his former team, the onus was on him to both atone and deliver. Done and done. Howard had 20 points and 22 rebounds Sunday night to lead the Houston Rockets over the Orlando Magic 98-88. "I just wanted to get the win tonight," Howard said. "Im just happy our team came out tonight, settled down and played basketball." Howard became the first Rockets player since Ralph Sampson in 1985-86 to pull down 18 or more rebounds in three straight games. Despite the positive outcome, dont expect to see Howard showing up late to any more shootarounds anytime soon. "Bad example," he said. "I shouldnt have done it." James Harden scored 27 points and also had 10 assists and eight rebounds for the Rockets. Terrence Jones contributed 16 points and 13 rebounds. Jones scored 10 a busy third quarter when Houston pulled away for good, extending its lead to as many as 22 points. He also blocked five shots, stopping Victor Oladipo as time expired in the third quarter to preserve an 83-61 lead. Chandler Parsons, who missed two games because of a sore back, started for Houston and had 18 points. "Our starting four and five had 35 rebounds between them," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. "James went and got eight rebounds, too. So that was big." Glenn Davis scored 18 in Orlandos fifth straight loss. Arron Afflalo finished with 16 points and Jameer Nelson added 15. "We just didnt play well," Davis said. "We cant make shots. Its not about the shots. Its about the defence. Everybody needs to be held accountable in making sure they do what they need to do, or its going to be a long season." Howard got off to a slow start offensively, but he amassed nine quick rebounds in the first quarter, thanks in part to the Magics 7-for-22 shooting. This was Howards first game against Orlando in a Rockets uniform, having faced his first former team last season while with the Los Angeles Lakers. Orlando made Howard the top pick of the 2004 NBA draft. He played for the Magic from 2005-2012, once led the team to the finals and remains Orlandos all-time leading scorer. The Magic shot just 27.7 per cent (13-for-47) from the field in the first half. But they benefited from at-times lacklustre rebounding the Rockets, which led to second-chance points that allowed them to loiter around. Orlando appeared poised to give the Rockets a tough test, scoring nine straight points to take a 9-2 lead. But the burst was brief. "We just came out sluggish and werent contesting shots, and we werent rebounding," Howard said. "We had to pick our energy level up, and thats what we did." The Rockets hurt the Magic from the 3-point line, making seven of 11 to erase that run by Orlando in the first quarter. Houston finished 10-for-33 from 3-point range against 8-for-29 for Orlando. The Magic cut Houstons lead to 28-25 with a burst of hustle to open the second quarter, capped by a 3 from ETwaun Moore. Thats as close as Orlando got the rest of the way. NOTES: The Magic missed C Nikola Vucevic (left ankle) for a third straight game. ... Rockets G Jeremy Lin (right knee) missed his sixth game but participated in pregame workouts. ... Houston tallied 10 blocks, its fourth double-digit game of the season. Matt Slauson Jersey . Dont miss a single shot, live on TSN beginning at 7pm et/4pm pt. Click here for the Dec.(SportsNetwork.com) - The Tampa Bay Lightning will aim for their second four- game winning streak in the span of a few weeks when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers for Mondays tilt at Wells Fargo Center. Tampa Bay is 7-1-0 over its last eight trips to the ice and enters Monday on a three-game winning streak. The recent surge began with four straight wins to close out December before the Bolts lost on Jan. 2 in Pittsburgh. However, Jon Coopers club rebounded from the setback against the Penguins with consecutive wins over Ottawa, Montreal and Buffalo. The hot streak has pushed Tampa Bay to the top of the Eastern Conference standings, where it sits one point ahead of the New York Islanders. The Lightning also hold a three-point lead over Montreal for first place in the Atlantic Division. Tampa hopes to keep rolling tonight against the Flyers, who have lost six straight, nine of 10 and 13 of the past 16 meetings in this series. Philadelphia last beat the Lightning on Feb. 5, 2013 in the City of Brotherly Love. Tampa Bay has won two straight encounters at the Wells Fargo Center. The Bolts are 2-0 against Philly this season and will try to complete a season-series sweep tonight. Tampa is coming off Fridays 2-1 win over the visiting Buffalo Sabres. Steven Stamkos scored the game-winning goal with 5:18 remaining in the third period. The goal pushed Stamkos team-high total to 22 and he also is pacing the Lightning with four game-winning markers. Valtteri Filppula also scored and Ben Bishop made 20 saves for the Lightning, who outshot the Sabres 47-21 in the win. They were getting a little bit tired ... we just kept pressing, Cooper said. Tampa is opening a two-game road trip Monday and will close the brief swing tomorrow night in Boston. With the Lightning pplaying on consecutive nights, Bishop is expected to get a rest from backup Evgeni Nabokov over the next two games.dddddddddddd Bishop is 1-1-0 with a 2.53 goals against average in his career against Philadelphia, while the veteran Nabokov owns a 10-4-0 mark and 2.69 GAA versus the Flyers. The Flyers will be without No. 1 netminder Steve Mason, who suffered a lower- body injury in Saturdays home loss against Boston. Mason is expected to miss at least one week of action and Philadelphia has recalled goaltender Rob Zepp from its AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Zepp will get the call tonight over Ray Emery. It will be the second NHL game for Zepp, who started for Philadelphia in Winnipeg on Dec. 21 and stopped 25- of-28 shots to win his debut. Philly is hoping to close a four-game homestand on a positive note. Craig Berubes club beat Ottawa and Washington to begin the stay at Wells Fargo Center before dropping a 3-1 decision to the Bruins. David Pastrnak scored the first two goals of his career to lead Boston to the win, while Flyers captain Claude Giroux registered the lone goal for the hosts. Mason started the game in net for Philadelphia, but left seven minutes into the first period with his injury. He stopped all five shots he faced while Ray Emery allowed three goals on 13 shots in relief. You just want to play solid when you come in that way, said Emery. I thought we played a really good defensive game, controlled the puck for extensive periods of time down there and had our chances. Thats just the way things go sometimes. The Flyers, who are 11 points out of a playoff spot in the East, fell to 10-6-3 at home this season. Philadelphia will play three of its next four on the road, beginning with Wednesdays game at Washington.
